Friday is Bad News Day New Jersey September 26, 2004 5:00am -- News Models in the News A recent study by Economics Professors Stefano Della Vigna and Joshua Pollet shows that companies use Fridays to release bad news. The purpose is to leverage the weekend to calm investors before Monday trading begins. Unveling poor earnings before weekends and holidays is a technique used to escape heavy selling in a company's stock. Karen Richardson of the Wall Street Journal points out that the findings are useful "for traders or investors who are more concerned about share-price moves than fundamentals, the Friday-announcement phenomenon provides some opportunities, though of course not every Friday-announcement contains bad news."
Bad news in a press release on Friday is accompanied with guidance from the company over the course of the week. The pattern is to let investors know between Monday and Thursday that financial results will differ from what is expected.
